Through the discussion of critical texts about the history of publication, and the analysis of historical and contemporary examples, Course 7: Only the Code Remains the Same: Publication as Material, Window, Forum, Copy, Container for Time by Molly Kleiman (Triple Canopy) will ask: How have artists, writers, and designers used the pages of magazines and books as sites of and material for experimentation? How have new-media publications challenged conventions of authorship and reception, only to have those very challenges soon become the foundation of the new economy? How have artists, writers, designers, and technologists responded to ensuing changes in the media landscape? And how have responses differed in areas with disparate resources and relationships to technology? How do the mechanisms of distribution inherent to publication formally, materially, or practically affect recorded media?

Biography
Molly Kleiman is editorial director of Triple Canopy, a magazine that advances a model for publication encompassing digital works of art and literature, public conversations, exhibitions, and books. In addition, as co-director of The Back Room, she organizes curatorial and pedagogical projects in collaboration with artists in the US and Iran. With these organizations, she has developed programming in partnership with MoMA PS1, the New York Public Library, the New Museum, the Whitney Museum, NY; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MA; Alumnos 47, Mexico City; Duplex Gallery, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Sazmanab Center for Contemporary Art, Tehran, Iran; among others. She is a founding member of Common Practice New York, an advocacy group that fosters research and discussions about the role of small-scale arts organizations in New York City; and is part-time faculty at New York University.
