Vjollca Krasniqi: Identity, Symbolism and Power: The Politics of Nation-Building in Kosovo

Venue: Boxing Club
Mark Isaku St. Prishtina
Republic of Kosovo

Focusing on identity, symbolism and power in post-war/post-independence Kosovo, the talk explains nation-building processes as envisaged by international actors and experienced by Kosovo Albanian elites and population. The contested politics of national identity enables various readings of national narrations and associated power dynamics. As this presentation will show, nation-building is re-worked through gendered power relations and narratives that give primacy to men, masculinity and masculine values. Understanding the relationship between gender and nation-building is, therefore, essential for grasping the patterns of constructing national identity.
