The Story of Propaganda Film
‘All art is propaganda,’ wrote George Orwell, ‘but not all propaganda is art.’[i] Something similar might be said of the cinema. The practices of propaganda have changed film, while film has continually shaped new forms of propaganda. For the past two years I have been working for the British Film Institute on a project examining the history of the propaganda film. While the digitisation programme and season at London’s South Bank will not be completed until later next year, in this presentation I will briefly present some working hypotheses about the development of propaganda film in the West from the Second World War to the present day. The presentation will include the screening of several short propaganda films.
