Announcement of the nominees for the Artists of Tomorrow Award 2023

Stacion – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina is pleased to announce the finalist of the Artists of Tomorrow Award 2023 with the following statement of the Jury, who met on 6 October 2023.

The jury has issued the following statement:

We members of the Jury of the Artists of Tomorrow Award 2023 met to review the 11 applications form the artists who applied in this year’s open call and met the criteria of the award. Following extensive discussions, the jury unanimously has selected three finalists based both on their promising proposals and on the strength of their existing work.

We are delighted to announce that the three finalists for the Artists of Tomorrow Award 2023 are Renea Begolli, Shkamb Jaka, and Arbesa Musa.

The work of Renea Begolli pushes painting past the comfort of canvas and uses it to investigate the tensions between the human and more-than-human worlds, that appear to be central to her practice. The layering in her work seems to ask, how can the sky of the future be rendered in the present? What are the layers that human techno-scientific exploration attempts to add to the natural world? Are the future and the sky territories that can be controlled and determined by humans?

Shkamb Jaka is an artist that shows a mature and well-developed pictorial language that is clearly his own, and who navigates at ease between different artistic disciplines. He has a very interesting reference world, anchored in quantum physics, astrophysics and metaphysics, and tries to provide viable representations for the phenomena that are described in them, bringing up the question of what is representable, and how.

Arbesa Musa is a multidisciplinary Kosovo diaspora artist, who uses the memory of her experience in Kosovo as a main source for her work. She uses everyday materials in subtle ways that allow for their evocative, emotional potential to come forward and take over.

We are excited to see what these three finalists will create for the exhibition at Stacion – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina and look forward to experiencing their work in December when the Jury will meet to select the winner of Artists of Tomorrow Award 2023.
