Course 8: The Art and Philosophy of Sport

Course Description
Contemporary sports such as football, boxing and MMA are a global phenomenon and one of the most dynamic engines of the process commonly known, celebrated and feared as globalisation.
Just as the multi-layered processes of industrialisation shaped the game, the subsequent industrialisation of sports has been intertwined with profound social and cultural change. This course examines how, over the course of the twentieth century, mediatised sports became one of the most significant cultural practices of the current global era.
Consequently, its a sector now bound up with the practice and patronage of art. In the first sessions of the course we discuss how the art world has approached sport: whether it (for instance) centres on rules, matches, players or even a kind of anthropology.
Then we turn our attention to a series of nationally and temporally specific case studies, including post-independence Africa, Europe and the USA.

The course is taught in five classes.
Class 1: Sport: Art, Philosophy and Aesthetics
Class 2: Sport and Social Realism
Class 3: Sport as Archive and Installation
Class 4: Sport and Community Art
Class 5: Sport as propaganda

Teaching will be in a seminar format: this will include mini-lectures, student presentations, discussions and writing workshops.

Biography
Scott Anthony is Deputy Head of Research and Public History across the Science Museum Group in the UK and is currently working on a project on boxing.

Previously he worked as a journalist for ten years at The Guardian, The Times of London and Future Publishing. He has written on football for a range of international media organisations including ESPN, ITV, The Blizzard, and When Saturday Comes.

He has been developing projects on the material culture of football and football art with the Singapore Sports Museum and the National Football Museum in the UK for the past seven years.

Participation
15 participants will be selected to participate in this course. Eligible participants must read the Terms, fill out the application form, upload the required documents and submit the application form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The conditions and registration fees
Enrollment fee 1 - 370 euros for self-paying students, with the offer of accommodation in student residences.
Enrollment fee 2 - 570 euros for institutionally sponsored students, with the offer of accommodation in student residences.

Special conditions apply for alumni of the Summer School as School.
Scholarships are available for students from Kosovo.
Payment must be made after successful application.
