Course 3: Translation: Using the concept in society, culture, knowledge and art production?

Description
There is no doubt about what has brought the concept of translation into the focus of social researchers, cultural theorists, scientists, and, not least, artists – the globalization and the rising complexity of the world in which we live today. The centuries old picture of the world as a cluster of sovereign nation states and different cultures, the concept of knowledge as meticulously divided into various disciplines and distributed among separate communities of peers, and the idea of art enclosed into its own autonomous sphere are crumbling before our eyes. The course will explore what has made translation – usually understood as an auxiliary form of a proper linguistic practice – a conceptual remedy for the growing chaos in our minds and lives.

Biography
Boris Buden is a writer and cultural critic based in Berlin. He studied philosophy in Zagreb and received his PhD in cultural theory from Humboldt University in Berlin. In the 1990s he was editor in the magazine Arkzin in Zagreb. His essays and articles cover the topics of philosophy, politics, cultural and art criticism. He has participated in various conferences and art projects in Western and Eastern Europe, Asia and the USA, including Documenta XI. Buden is a permanent fellow at The European Institute for Progressive Cultural Policies in Vienna. Buden has lectured at universities in Europe and the USA. Currently, he teaches cultural theory at The University of Applied Arts Vienna. Buden is co-editor and author of several books, including Barikade Zagreb (1996/1997), Kaptolski Kolodvor, Belgrade (2001), Der Schacht von Babel, Berlin (2004), Übersetzung: Das Versprechen eines Begriffs, (Together with S. Nowotny), Vienna 2008, Zone des Übergangs, Frankfurt/Main (2009), Findet Europa. Eine Suche in der Dolmetscherkabine, (Vienna 2014), Transition to Nowhere: Art in History After 1989, (Berlin 2020) etc.

Participation
15 participants will be selected to participate in this course. Eligible participants must read the Terms, fill out the application form, upload the required documents and submit the application form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The conditions and registration fees
Enrollment fee 1 - 370 euros for self-paying students, with the offer of accommodation in student residences.
Enrollment fee 2 - 570 euros for institutionally sponsored students, with the offer of accommodation in student residences.

Special conditions apply for alumni of the Summer School as School.
Scholarships are available for students from Kosovo.
Payment must be made after successful application.
