Stacion - Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina is pleased to introduce the presentation of Yll Rugova, part of the Public Program of Summer School as School 2017.
A manifesto for lazy people
As individuals, but also as a team, with my partners we always had this idea that in our core we are very lazy people. And this applies not only to us, but to (maybe) all human species. When we founded Trembelat in 2005, our idea was to work hard, so that we do not need to work anymore. Through Trembelat we wanted, in a way to write our Manifesto for Laziness. Something we never wrote physically—because we were lazy.
Trembelat is an ivented word derived from "tre" (three) and "dembelat" (lazy), as we where three founders in the beginning.
Yll Rugova (1984) is a graphic designer, typographer and social activist. An expert on information architecture and design of materials with larger quantity of content. In 2015 he founded Trembelat, a graphic design group. Yll is a board member of REDO Design Conference in Prishtina, an annual international conference dealing with graphic design in general. As a political and social activist, he is known as one of the founders of the Strong Party in 2013, a devoted advocate for secularism, creative commons, feminism and political reform in Kosovo.
In their lecture they will focus on two examples of (participatory) monuments, one in Pristina (Kosovo), the other one in Klagenfurt/Celovec (Austria). Both monuments are typographic sculptures with big letters located in public space.
«NEWBORN» was designed by Fisnik Ismaili and placed in front of the Palace of Youth and Sports in 2008 to celebrate Kosovo’s independence. The participatory moment is the fact that it is allowed to write on it.
«Gerichtssprache» [language used in court] was designed by Toledo i Dertschei, located in front of the district court of Klagenfurt. It was set up in 2007 in the course of the inauguration of the new court building. It questions the general regulations for the right to use a recognized minority language at court. The monument can also be used as seating for everyone.
They will talk about the history of the fonts used in the two monuments an their use in art and advertising. They will give examples of the different applications of these commonly used and yet neutral fonts like for logos of museum in Vienna or the guidance system in transport and traffic.
Finally they will analyse technical details like legibility, spacing, aesthetics, etc.
